In many regions across the country and in Tampa, roof algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) is a growing problem. The algae thrives in Tampa’s warm humid climates, usually first appearing on the north facing slopes of your roof where the right amount of shade and moisture are common. With the proper atmosphere in Tampa, the algae only needs one more element to survive and that’s food.

Roof algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in the manufacturing of asphalt shingles. When shingles were first produced manufacturers quickly realized they were too light and would not provide adequate protection, so they added crushed limestone to the asphalt to add weight and durability to the shingles.

Gloeocapsa Magma is an airborne algae so it can land on any Tampa roof with no rhyme or reason, though it does seem to be more prominent in areas holding a lot of trees. Once the roof algae lands on the roof it will have to be killed and removed properly or it will continue to spread.
It will never get better or just go away on its own.
The algae begins feeding on the nutrients in the roofing shingles.
As it rains it is spread down the roof causing black streaks. If not taken care of it will take over the entire roof in a few short years turning the whole roof shingles black.

Asphalt roofs across Tampa FL are being infested by a dark green algae (commonly considered black mold or Mildew). The technical term for the algae is Gloeocapsa Magma.
Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mold or Gren Mildew is spread by wind and animals, and grows from a dot to a spot to a streak. As a Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Green Mildew colony grows, older algae decompose and will hold moisture, which enables the entire colony to grow even more rapidly. Many times a Tampa homeowner will just notice a spot, and in no time, half the asphalt roof shingles are covered.
Luckily, the Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mildew can be removed with professional Tampa roof algae cleaning service .
Because the algae is spread by the wind, annual roof shingle care and prevention is needed in Tampa to prevent the Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mildew from returning to your Tampa Roof.

Black Roof Stains On Tampa Roof

Gloeocapsa magma is blue-green algae, which is cyanobacteria, it is a type of algae. Algae are polyphyletic, and major algal groups are not all closely related to each other. Algae is NOT a taxonomic category, it is just a common name for all things photosynthetic that are NOT plants. Cyanobacteria are an ancient line of photosynthesizing bacteria, responsible for Oxygen gas in the atmosphere. It can be said that Cyanobacteria are responsible for all advanced forms (eukaryotic cells) of life on earth. It has gained notoriety in here in the Southeast.
The reason is this particular type of blue-green algae is responsible for creating the unattractive black roof stains and/or streaks commonly noticed by many. The blue-green algae, unicellular, accumulate over time; this accumulation begins to show the problematic black stains as the cyanobacteria develop their dark and hard UV-protective outer coating.

The primary reasoning behind the rapid spread and noticeability of this algae in the Tampa Florida area are:

1. Rising humidity and temperatures in Tampa combined with more and more bacteria spores promotes their spread with these favorable conditions.

2. Fiberglass shingles (the most commonly seen amongst today’s residential homes) have been being made with limestone as a filler (in the asphalt). These shingles hold moisture and organic “bacteria food” material longer (especially on the North-side in the Midwest) than the paper/asphalt/ceramic shingles of 20+ years ago. Additionally, these particular algae enjoy the limestone as a food source.

Once the blue-green algae have become noticeable, the stains will continue to worsen year to year. There is debate over the actual harmfulness of this particular blue-green algae to roofs, as there is little supportive scientific research. However, most “experts” within the subject area conclude the blue-green algae to be harmful, if left untreated, as the growth holds moisture within shingles causing premature aging, rotting, and/or granule loss.

The people who make your shingles have only one recommended way to clean them, and thats the method we use. Some other roof cleaning companies in Tampa FL use this method, most dont. Why? Look at one of our roof cleaning trucks in the picture above, see the size of that tank? The A.R.M.A method we use requires the application of a lot of a very weak roof cleaning chemical solution so as not to damage your roof. Because our business is cleaning roofs, not cutting grass, pressure washing, or putting up Christmas lights, we are properly equipped to do it right. Roof cleaning is our full time business, not something we do when there’s no grass to cut, or pressure washing to do. We do it better. Our large tanks and high volume pumps insure compliance to A.R.M.A standards for safe, non pressure roof cleaning in the tampa, fl area.. We learned long ago that chemical roof cleaning is not a one man job. All our trucks have 2 or 3 man cleaning crews for everyones safety. Only one person cleaning your roof is an invitation for disaster. They cant see, or do anything about the inevitable roof cleaning chemical overspray getting on plants, your paint, or your neighbors property. By the time they get done spraying the roof cleaning chemical, the damage is already done.It is much too late to rinse the roof cleaning chemical off. Your neighbors will just love you when the uninsured one man wanna be roof cleaners overspray removes their paint, and kills their plants. And guess who is responsible, you are ! We guarantee in writing not to void your shingle warranty. Nor to cause any damage to your roof. Why fool around and take a chance of ruining your roof ? Call us and be sure of having it done the right way. Go to our website at http://www.saferoofcleaning.com/ and SEE who we are ?
