In many regions across the country and in Tampa, roof algae (Gloeocapsa Magma) is a growing problem. The algae thrives in Tampa’s warm humid climates, usually first appearing on the north facing slopes of your roof where the right amount of shade and moisture are common. With the proper atmosphere in Tampa, the algae only needs one more element to survive and that’s food.

Roof algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in the manufacturing of asphalt shingles. When shingles were first produced manufacturers quickly realized they were too light and would not provide adequate protection, so they added crushed limestone to the asphalt to add weight and durability to the shingles.

Gloeocapsa Magma is an airborne algae so it can land on any Tampa roof with no rhyme or reason, though it does seem to be more prominent in areas holding a lot of trees. Once the roof algae lands on the roof it will have to be killed and removed properly or it will continue to spread.
It will never get better or just go away on its own.
The algae begins feeding on the nutrients in the roofing shingles.
As it rains it is spread down the roof causing black streaks. If not taken care of it will take over the entire roof in a few short years turning the whole roof shingles black.

Tampa Roof Cleaning Volunteers !

Here we are doing some Volunteer Charity Roof Cleaning Work in The Brandon Florida Area.
At Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa, we believe in giving something back to our Community.
The Tampa area has been good to us, making our roof cleaning company number one in the Tampa Bay Area.
Thank you people of Tampa for your confidence in us !
The information below is copied from the original Tampa Roof Cleaning Volunteers webpage.

Brandon – Tampa Volunteers + Apple Roof Cleaning
——————————————————————————–
We are proud of our volunteer non pressure roof cleaning involvement in the Tampa area.

We are thankful that Apple Non Pressure Roof Cleaning Of Tampa 813 655 8777 was kind enough to assist us again, in the roof and exterior cleaning of this Tampa area Charity.
Cleaning the older Asphalt Roofing Shingles of this Charity Project came out beautifully.

Apple Non Pressure Roof Cleaning’s equipment, personnel, and knowledge of Cleaning Asphalt Shingle Roofing, along with the help of our many volunteers, made the non pressure roof cleaning, and exterior chemical washing of this important Tampa area charity, come out beautifully.

Chris, the owner of Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa, is a nationally known Asphalt Shingle Roof Cleaning Expert.
He is the founder of the Roof Cleaning Institute Of America and a teacher of the latest Roof Cleaning Methods.

The Brandon Outreach Clinic helps out a lot of less fortunate adults and children w/o any medical insurance in the greater Tampa area.

Being on a limited budget, The Outreach Clinic can not always afford non pressure roof cleaning when it is needed.
Every dollar they receive is community donations from the Greater Tampa area.
This goes towards providing free medical care for area children, and others in need.

Though many of our members actually own pressure cleaning equipment, the Outreach Clinic’s building and asphalt shingle roof are quite old.

It was a group decision, made after consulting with Chris Tucker, and his son Jamie of Apple Non Pressure Roof Cleaning of Tampa, that any high pressure washing of the Outreach Clinic’s older asphalt shingle roof and building exterior would cause irreversible damage to this Tampa area community charity.

Brandon Singles Group thanks Apple Non Pressure Roof Cleaning of Tampa for the free repeated usage of their trucks, guidance, and non pressure roof cleaning expertise in this volunteer charity project.

If you are a quality single person in the Greater Tampa area, and would like to be a part of the Brandon Singles Group, free membership information can be found on our home page link below.

This all volunteer building exterior, and Tampa non pressure roof cleaning project, is but one example of how our members give something back to our Tampa community

Asphalt roofs across Tampa FL are being infested by a dark green algae (commonly considered black mold or Mildew). The technical term for the algae is Gloeocapsa Magma.
Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mold or Gren Mildew is spread by wind and animals, and grows from a dot to a spot to a streak. As a Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Green Mildew colony grows, older algae decompose and will hold moisture, which enables the entire colony to grow even more rapidly. Many times a Tampa homeowner will just notice a spot, and in no time, half the asphalt roof shingles are covered.
Luckily, the Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mildew can be removed with professional Tampa roof algae cleaning service .
Because the algae is spread by the wind, annual roof shingle care and prevention is needed in Tampa to prevent the Gloeocapsa Magma Algae Mildew from returning to your Tampa Roof.

Black Roof Stains On Tampa Roof

Gloeocapsa magma is blue-green algae, which is cyanobacteria, it is a type of algae. Algae are polyphyletic, and major algal groups are not all closely related to each other. Algae is NOT a taxonomic category, it is just a common name for all things photosynthetic that are NOT plants. Cyanobacteria are an ancient line of photosynthesizing bacteria, responsible for Oxygen gas in the atmosphere. It can be said that Cyanobacteria are responsible for all advanced forms (eukaryotic cells) of life on earth. It has gained notoriety in here in the Southeast.
The reason is this particular type of blue-green algae is responsible for creating the unattractive black roof stains and/or streaks commonly noticed by many. The blue-green algae, unicellular, accumulate over time; this accumulation begins to show the problematic black stains as the cyanobacteria develop their dark and hard UV-protective outer coating.

The primary reasoning behind the rapid spread and noticeability of this algae in the Tampa Florida area are:

1. Rising humidity and temperatures in Tampa combined with more and more bacteria spores promotes their spread with these favorable conditions.

2. Fiberglass shingles (the most commonly seen amongst today’s residential homes) have been being made with limestone as a filler (in the asphalt). These shingles hold moisture and organic “bacteria food” material longer (especially on the North-side in the Midwest) than the paper/asphalt/ceramic shingles of 20+ years ago. Additionally, these particular algae enjoy the limestone as a food source.

Once the blue-green algae have become noticeable, the stains will continue to worsen year to year. There is debate over the actual harmfulness of this particular blue-green algae to roofs, as there is little supportive scientific research. However, most “experts” within the subject area conclude the blue-green algae to be harmful, if left untreated, as the growth holds moisture within shingles causing premature aging, rotting, and/or granule loss.

Its only 5 Days into March in and Tampa Home Owner Associations (HOA) are already busy at enforcing Deed Restrictions and/or covenant rules. Which rules? Rules most people don’t even know about. Restrictions governing the appearance of your Tampa ROOF SHINGLES.
Most people in Tampa think about deed restrictions governing barking dogs and where the garbage cans are stored, but in Tampa, Florida and other states, the “Home Appearance” clause now insists that your tile or shingle roof be ‘free of stains, algae, black mold, moss, mildew, or other unsightly roof distortions’.

Over the last several days I have spoken to a number of homeowners in a Tampa Florida development who have received letters from their Tampa Homeowners Association telling them to Clean their roofs, or the neighborhood association would have them cleaned and send them the roof cleaning bill!

Why clean your Tampa Roof you ask? Its pretty simple actually, think about crab grass.

When your lawn is covered in crab grass, it looks bad, and property values may reflect the unattractive appearance. When you remove the crab grass from your lawn, and your neighbor doesn’t, well the crab grass ends back up in your lawn too! The whole neighborhood suffers.

Black Roof Stains are pretty much like crab grass, but much worse!

* Black Roof Stains are caused by an airborne algae that will spread from roof to roof (if everyone does not keep a clean roof, then no one will have a clean roof).

* Black streaks on your roof (which is the most visible part of the house) will make the house look bad, and everyone’s home then suffers a decrease in value.

* Roof Algae will lead to premature shingle roofing failure.

* Worst of all, black roof algae, can allow mold to get into a home creating ‘sick home’ syndrome.

The solution to this problem ?
First Clean your Tampa Roof w/o Pressure Cleaning. Second Block the Stains from returning.

The Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Plan gives you the tools to meet your deed restrictions, makea your roof last as long as it should, and keeps the house healthy.

Origin of the Roof Stains on your Tampa Roof:
Cyano bacteria has existed on earth for millions of years. Bacteria spores are carried by wind, birds, squirrels, etc. The roof stains are caused by the airborne spores from blue / green algae (Cyano Bacteria). These roof raiders land on your roof shingles and feed on the limestone base of the asphalt shingles. The fungus, mold and mildew grow on the roof algae, as they require organic food (the algae) to survive.

Survival – Prior to 1978, cyano bacteria would starve to death when it landed on your Tampa roof:
After 1978 limestone was added to asphalt shingles, and limestone is a favorite food for algae, properly called cyano bacteria gloeocapsa.
So when the wind and birds spread algae to your Tampa roof, it thrives on your roof by eating it!

Roof Stains On Tampa Roof:
Bacteria Gloeocapsa, an airborne bacteria that is spread from one house to another by wind and animals (birds, squirrels).
Roof algae needs three criteria to grow: Heat, moisture, and nutrients.
Your home’s roof, provides sun, rain, and limestone in the shingles. Everything to support a colony of bacteria.
Once the algae / bacteria are in place, fungus and mold arrive! Mold, Mildew, Lichens feed on the roof algae.
The fungus and mildew, would not survive without the roof algae / bacteria, and the roof algae / bacteria survives, because new asphalt shingles are made from limestone.

Roof Stains: Rapid Spread in Tampa
As the roof algae grows, it holds moisture allowing the growth to accelerate.
Thus the roof streaks and stains spread wider and darker over time.
The spread of roof algae, mold, mildew and associated roof fungus extends throughout the country.
Originally believed to be primarily a Florida issue, the spores have been found to survive in some of the harshest climates.
Even shingle manufacturers have indicated that 80 percent of the asphalt shingle roofs in the United States are streaked or showing signs of being affected.
An estimated 40 percent of shingle roofs in Michigan, have an shingle algae problem.
Extreme temperatures won’t prevent the roof streaks spread, extreme heat or cold make them dormant until more favorable weather returns.

Tampa Roof Stains: What to do?
At the first sign of roof algae/fungus streaks, it makes good sense to clean your Tampa roof! Here’s why: As the roof algae and fungus grow on your Tampa roof, they eat away the base of the shingle and expand and contract with the outside temperature. This growth and movement loosens the granules, creating premature granule loss, dramatically shortening the life of your roof. A 25-year roof may not even last 15 years in Tampa if nothing is done. Failure to remove the roof algae will raise roof temperatures by preventing the reflective capabilities of the granules from doing their job. These temperatures make your air conditioner work a lot harder and increase your Tampa Electric bills sometimes as much as several hundred dollars a year.

Tampa Roof Cleaning
What you should know about cleaning your Tampa roof…

Your house is most likely your biggest investment and your roof is one of the most expensive parts of your house. It is extremely important to have the utmost in confidence in your decision before hiring a qualified Tampa roof cleaning contractor.

Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa only use chemicals approved by the ARMA* Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association and does not use pressure on your roof shingles. We also provide our roof cleaning customers with a technical bulletin directly from Asphaltroofing.org to prove that our roof cleaning procedures and chemicals are properly formulated for roof cleaning. Our chemicals provide enough cleaning power to remove all roof mold, mildew, and black streaks…without any pressure washing or heavy rinsing. We guarantee your Tampa Roof will look brand new after cleaning.

Pressure washing is never recommended to clean a roof because it will remove a large amount of the ceramic coated granules from your shingles, which will void the roofing warranty. Even low pressure will cause roof granule loss and shorten the life of your roofing shingles. If you have ever cleaned out the inside of your gutters you will notice granules in them just from the rain taking them off. Think what any additional pressure would do to your roof. For instance, you see someone cleaning a roof in Tampa with pressure and it appears they have done a good roof cleaning job just because the black streaks and discoloration are gone, but guess what? So is a large amount of the roofs protective ceramic coated granules which insure your shingle’s warranty. Nobody wants to replace a prematurely failed roof in Tampa due to an incompetent roof cleaning contractor, and you shouldn’t have to.

We offer an Unconditional 1 year warranty against any streaks reappearing on your shingles.

Always use a ‘chemical only’ cleaning process for your roof. Roof cleaning is a completely different trade from pressure washing requiring different pumps, plumbing, hoses, nozzles, valves, chemicals, caution, knowledge, experience, skill, and insurance. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa has all of the necessary tools, and we have taught the roof cleaning trade to others.

Make sure you know what kind of roof cleaning chemicals are being applied on your property. Do not accept “it’s biodegradable” for an answer. Even uranium is biodegradable over 50,000 years or so. Our roof cleaning chemicals do all of the work to remove streaks and discoloration from your roof and require no pressure or heavy rinsing. Because we do not have to rinse, your roof will stay cleaner longer than our competitors. Leaving the chemicals on the roof creates a roof treatment or a hostile environment for future algae growth. Each time it rains, a small amount of chemical is washed off to help re-clean your roof over and over again.

Concerned about your plants, pets, and landscaping?

We only spray the roof, not your plants. We always bag the ends of your downspouts and collect all the chemical run-off from the roof and dispose of them away from your landscaping. After the chemical biodegrades and evaporates from the roof, the dried crystals and surfactant act as a roof treatment and keep the roof cleaner longer as it rains.
